Born and raised in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Umi was a spoiled child. Her mother, a college professor on physiology and human anatomy, and father, a widely-experienced coroner, brought home about $162,000 a year collectively. Umi had a pleasantly lavish lifestyle, developing an attitude to fit. She never thought of her parents' wealth as a weapon, but rather a thing to fall back onto. She liked to do things herself and only gave in when she needed.

Her parents had found Umi's interest in physical activity when she was about six, entering her into multiple gymnastics teams and competitions. Umi was happy with her athleticism and focused very hard on it, scoring the top in her competitions. After befriending someone in her club, she was first exposed to video games. To put it short: it flipped her world upside down.

Umi started playing them much more than practicing, and her parents became worried that she was going to drop her bright future in gymnastics. After being told that she cannot play games, Umi had her first large conflict with her parents. She put on a facade and pretended to drop them not only to her parents, but everyone around her. When she claimed she was out practicing, she was actually going to her friend's house and playing games.

She got into a cute little game known as Little Big Planet 2, though she wouldn't admit that she got into it at first for its cute characters and wide customization possibilities. She soon met a nice boy named Makoto, and the two quickly got along together. The two focused so much on gaming and hanging out that they never even thought to mention what prefectures they lived in, let alone their family names.

Her parents soon started to notice that she although she was returning to her gold status in gymnastics, she was becoming increasingly disinterested in keeping it going. After a while, she started to fall back down again. Her parents later agreed that maybe they were a little too strict, so they gave in and let her visit her friend again to play.. but only an hour a day. Umi was ecstatic, though a little disappointed with the time limit. She didn't argue though, and she soon got better over time. Her parents then noticed that her determination was rising once more thanks to the games and came up with an agreement.

After their agreement, her parents got her a birthday present of a PS3.. and her friend gave her LBP2 to keep. But it had a catch.. she could only keep the video games if she agreed to go to a certain popular school in Tokyo and that it was limited to two hours a day so she'd have more time for academics. Overjoyed, Umi agreed instantly and she was able to play video games in secret. She never told anybody about her secret gaming addiction, so only her parents and Makoto knew.

Because her father got moved to Tokyo for a bigger job, her mother stayed back and Umi got taken with her father to go to the school. Tokyo was only an hour away from Hakone, so the move was quick and easy. She quickly took a liking to the big city and continued secretly playing her games and chatting with Makoto, going onto four years of friendship.

She graduated from her gymnastics club and agreed to, due to the yearly pay being cut in half since her parents weren't combining salaries at the time, to settle for an athletic club at her new school. It wasn't long before her first day of high school came along.. her first day at Natsukashii High.
